Wow!
Even I was surprised when I went for my evening walk last week and saw all this tagging on and around Kuhio Beach in Waikiki!
Yes, I know there are gangs in Hawaii and on the island of Oahu (hate to break it to you) but in the past, there has not been outward signs of their presence, especially in Waikiki. But, times are changing and it's a sad commentary on life in paradise.
I've seen tagging in other cities but lately, these obnoxious and disgusting spray painted signs of turf, have been more and more prevalent. Mostly they are covered over quickly, but this spurt on one the most popular beaches in the world, made quite a statement. It's been corrected now, but for several days, we all had to see and FEEL this disrespectful show of muscle.
In a time where the city is strapped for cash, it makes me sick to think of the cost and time and energy involved in reversing this vandalism.
I'm not sure what the solution to the problem is, legally anyway, although we have many "creative" solutions that we've been batting around, we just wish these guys would find some other way to occupy their time.
